This photo series I created in response to the various themes that have been discussed in my Art History class. Instead of looking at historical art on a chronological timeline, we have been exploring the history of art based on a thematic approach. Of the themes encountered so far, I have chosen to represent Mortality and Spirituality together, as both of these themes have a lot in common and can be seen differently in each photograph. My photographs are generally taken with some kind of idea or reason in mind, I choose to take each photograph based on personal interest and motivation. Mortality is often and commonly represented with the idea of funerals and headstones in a cemetery in mind, so I chose to photograph in a cemetery. I purposefully included the dog in my cemetery photos to show contrast between life and death; between something that people often associate with light & happiness and something people associate with dark & sadness. The church in the cemetery is something that can be associated with both the idea of death as well as the faith and happiness that comes with spirituality. The photo of the broken stained glass window in the church gave me the thought that even though people may fear death and mortality, having a spiritual belief or faith will act as a kind of light that will keep you afloat in life, even after facing the exposure to death. All of the spiritual symbols in my photos with the candle are representative of my personal religion, and I feel there is a clear idea of spirit and light acting as a guide when the rest of the world may appear dark and filled with despair.
